will need to have a massive clear-out to prove wrong as they look to secure Premier League glory over the coming years. They look set for a bottom-half finish after a disastrous campaign, while their hopes of winning a domestic trophy went up in flames when they were dumped out of the by Fulham.

United have made it their mission to win another league title in the coming years, with conjuring up the ambitious plan in a bid to revive the club’s fortunes. The project, , aims to deliver Premier League success by their 150th anniversary in 2028 as part of the broader Project 150 initiative. has maintained that his ultimate goal is to lead United back to the top of the domestic pile, but club legend Rooney is less than convinced.

Speaking on , Rooney said: “I think it’s a little naive to say they’re looking to win the Premier League because from where they are now, they’re a long way off that. He says winning the Premier League, how can they compete? To get further up the table, I think that’s the next step for them.”

There is still time for United to make Rooney eat his words, but only if they are prepared to get rid of as many as 13 players who are simply not good enough to play for a title-winning side.

They will need a new goalkeeper for starters, with Andre Onana’s tendency to concede soft goals not conducive to United’s ambitious title plan. His distribution, for what is supposed to be one of his best qualities, has also been lacking since he moved to Old Trafford.

In defence, an overhaul in the centre-back position will be required with Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans making way. United could also do with replacing Diogo Dalot, who has shown time and time again that he is not equipped to cope with the demands of the wing-back role.

Signing at least three new central midfielders would also go a long way to helping United in their bid to achieve Premier League glory. Mason Mount is perpetually injured and has failed to prove himself when fit, while Casemiro and Christian Eriksen are clearly over the hill.

United’s most pressing issue will be to recruit a top-class striker, having been without one for a number of seasons. Neither of their existing options are good enough for a club of their stature, with and Joshua Zirkzee both entirely replaceable.

The likes of Antony and Jadon Sancho should also be moved on, having failed to justify their exorbitant transfer fees since joining the Red Devils. Marcus Rashford, meanwhile, can be a useful player but has made it clear that he sees his future away from Old Trafford.

In any case, it seems obvious that United need major surgery to stand any chance of returning to the upper reaches of the Premier League table. Only time will tell if they will make the required changes over the coming years to prove Rooney wrong and restore former glories.
