All gardeners warned ‘perfect time’ to plant vegetables is just days away

An expert has warned gardeners across the country that the ideal time to plant vegetables is just around the corner. As we leave the cold winter months behind us and move closer to summer, Brits will eagerly await a chance to enjoy their outdoor spaces.

March is usually a hectic time for , who can now get stuck into their early spring jobs, such as cutting the grass, pruning roses, and planting, especially and certain vegetables.

In fact, Craig Wilson, expert and founder of , said this is the month when our gardens start to “awaken”, meaning it’s the “perfect time” to plant root .

So, if you plan to grow your own this year, now may be the time to get your hands dirty. 

Identifying “mid-to-late March as the perfect time”, Craig explained: “March is when the garden really starts to awaken, so now is the perfect time to plant root vegetables like carrots and beetroot. Hardy garden plants can also be planted from now, including shrubs and perennials.

“However, make sure the soil is free of stones and other large debris so they can grow large and straight. Mid to late March is the best time to sow a variety of salad crops like lettuce, spinach, mustard and corn salad.

“These can be prepared directly in the soil as soon as the ground is no longer frozen. For flowers, tubers like dahlias can be started indoors and planted outside when matured a little further.”

Craig isn’t the only expert who understands the importance of the early spring when it comes to planting. , curator at , also reminded gardeners that early March is the  bare-root trees and shrubs.

Rob explained that it also represents an opportunity for gardeners to split and divide clumps of herbaceous plants and move them to other areas in their outdoor , or you could even gift them to your friends. 

He also emphasised that March is a great time to plant veggies, including early potatoes, onion sets and shallots. However, his choice was quite different when he was asked what he’d choose if only allowed to plant one thing this month. 

Rob said: “March and April are also the time to plant many of our traditional vegetables early potatoes, onion sets and shallots, for example. If I had to choose one thing to plant in spring it would be summer flowering bulbs. We often neglect to think about this, as we concentrate on planting spring flowering bulbs in autumn.”
