Former Gardeners’ World star has shared how fellow horticulturists should be careful about not doing one thing while completing a common gardening task. Sharing his latest advice with fellow horticulturists on the , the green fingered guru emphasised the importance of getting the process of designing your garden correct: “I think the important thing to do is not to rush into it, particularly if you are moving into a new house, you want to see the sunrise and sunset a few times before you start deciding ‘oh we’re going to have this there and that there’.”
He also added that it is crucial to organise our garden correctly as the ‘pattern of the sun’ can affect how we use our gardens, as he explained: “The pattern of the sun is very important particulalry, if you know, you like a G&T of an evening and want to sit in the setting sun and it happens to be around the other side of the house or down that end of the garden and not this.”

Continuing to offer pearls of wisdom to listeners as he said that there is a balance to be struck when it comes to deciding on how to map out our gardens: “So, I wouldn’t say wait a year, that seems far too patient, none of us have got that patience.”
He continued: “But, you do need to get a feel of a place when you move into it, if there’s one spot that’s always in the shade and you’re thinking that’s where you’re going to put your patio or terrace or whatever then think again.”

Ensuring that we get our garden plans right, his top tip is to ‘create a list’: “The best thing to do is to make a list of what you want in a garden and then work out the best places to put them which is an awful lot of work and consideration in just one sentence. But, that’s key, to make sure your garden works for you.”
Away from providing his latest horticultural advice on the Gardeners’ World podcast, Alan has established himself as a prominent voice in the world of horticulture down the years. The 75-year-old has forged a hugely successfull TV career that saw him present Gardeners’ World on the for seven years between 1996 and 2003, when he was replaced by the current host, Monty Don.
