Meghan Markle’s unlikely friendship with Mindy Kaling as star joins Netflix show

With Love, Meghan airs on Netflix on March 4 after the initial January release date was pushed back. The series sees presenting herself as a lifestyle guru as she offers tips on being the ultimate host.

Expected to be a ratings hit for , the series has already divided public opinion. Notable guests on the show include Abigail Spencer, Vicky Tsai and Roy Choi, as well as American actress Mindy Kaling.

The award-winning actress, comedian and screenwriter first gained recognition as Kelly Kapoor in The Office, followed by The Mindy Project and Never Have I Ever. She first appeared on Meghan’s now-cancelled podcast Archetypes in 2022.

They forged a close bond after they recorded the episode, titled ‘The Stigma of the Singleton’. During their chat, Mindy spoke to the Meghan about ‘the joys, challenges, and stigmas of her life as a single, unmarried woman’ as well as her decision to start a family on her own.

She now has three children – Katherine, Spencer and Anne. Mindy had admitted she did not like taking part in podcasts because she was worried her honesty would “p*** people off”.

However, Meghan explained how Mindy’s honesty “is what makes her and her work so powerful”.

Meghan and Mindy have since bonded over their style of parenting as they both try to keep their young children out of the spotlight.

During Mindy’s episode of Archetypes, they also connected over growing up as ‘latchkey kids’ and their childhood memories.

Mindy has since spoken out about a huge “misconception” about Meghan, telling Time magazine: “I think a misconception about Meghan is that she’s in any way fussy or has expectations of fanciness.

“She really is a down-to-earth person who knows a lot of fun tricks to make entertaining and cooking easier.”

On her guest cameo on Meghan’s new series, the star expanded: “I was on maternity leave with my daughter in March and April, and Meghan texted me that she was doing a show where she was going to cook for her friend.

“I wanted to get taken care of in that moment of my life. That was a fun maternity leave field trip.

“I left with a basket of fresh produce and homemade jam and hot sauce because she knew I loved hot sauce. She’s a very generous woman who knew I needed a break.”

The theme was throwing a party for children and Mindy was keen to learn more about entertaining guests.

The actress added: “I don’t know anything about how you’re not supposed to use overhead lighting when people come over. You’re supposed to use little lamps.”

She went on to praise Meghan for her hosting skills, adding: “For kids’ parties I usually just go to the party supply store and get paper things, which I don’t judge and neither does she.”
