Former coach has been named as the new manager of Kenya. The 47-year-old has agreed a two year deal after . His appointment comes just two weeks before the Harambee Stars resume their qualifying campaign. They will travel to Gambia on March 17 and then host Gabon seven days later.
Kenya are five points behind Group F leaders Ivory Coast with six matches to play. The group winners qualify for the finals, with the four best runners-up going into a second round. After being unveiled, McCarthy stated: “It’s been an absolute privilege and pleasure to be here in Kenya. I am delighted, and I can’t really wait to start our new journey to make Kenya again one of the powerhouses in Africa.”
McCarthy replaces interim boss Francis Kimanzi, who had taken over following the resignation of Turkish coach Firat Engin last year. The ex-Porto, and striker’s backroom staff will consist of assistant coach Vasili Manousakis, goalkeeper coach Moeneeb Josephs, and performance analyst Pilela Maposa.
“Together with my coaching team, we are committed to building a structured, disciplined, and competitive squad,” he added. “Our goal is to develop a strong team identity, play exciting football, and make the nation proud.

McCarthy, who won 79 caps for South Africa and scored 31 goals, joined ‘s coaching staff in the summer of 2022. following last season’s win, citing his desire to return to management.
Before arriving in Manchester, McCarthy had stints in charge of Cape Town City and AmaZulu in his homeland. That followed a career that yielded 153 goals at club level, and he was part of the Porto side that, under , won the in 20023/04.
He spent four seasons at Ewood Park, scoring 52 times, before leaving for West Ham in 2010. However, he made just 14 appearances for the Hammers before heading back to South Africa to play for the Orlando Pirates.
