In an exclusive chat with Express.co.uk, gardening expert Andrew White – on behalf of Rhino Greenhouses – revealed the best to grow in March.

Considering the UK climate, access to a greenhouse—whether in your  or an allotment—is necessary.

Red, gold, and purple radishes can be sown in March under 1cm of soil inside a greenhouse.

Andrew advised Planting them in trays or containers deep enough for their deliciously crunchy bulbs to form.

The gardening expert confirmed that these vegetables are “easy to grow” and have flavours ranging from mild to peppery.

Andrew advised: “Keeping the radishes cool and wet will prevent the plants from going to seed before you harvest them.

“Check your seed packet for specific information about harvesting – most varieties will be delicious on your plate within just three to four weeks of sowing.”

Spring onions are another vegetable you can grow in a greenhouse from March, but it must be the “summer variety”.

The gardening maestro: “Some variants thrive in the cool, and others flourish as temperatures rise.”

He continued: “Prepare your soil before planting, by adding some fertiliser, and making sure it is moist.”

Andrew added: “You can plant in seed trays to transplant outside later or seed them straight into larger containers or pots in the greenhouse until they are ready to harvest.

“The seeds can be planted on the soil and then covered with a very thin layer of soil, just 15mm deep.”

Spring onion seeds grow best when sown into well-drained soil, 5 cm apart, so container pots with good drainage holes are imperative.

You can expect spring onions to grow up to eight weeks before being harvested. Lastly, the other vegetable to grow in March (although it’s technically a fruit) is the tomato.

Vine tomatoes are best if you plan on keeping them in the greenhouse until summer, but a bush variant is “easier to manage” if you want to grow tomatoes on a vegetable patch.

“Your seeds can go into trays and pots under about 1cm of soil,” said Andrew. “Keep them somewhere warm, but out of direct sunlight, until the seeds germinate.”

He added: “At this point, move them somewhere bright, keep them well watered, and enjoy seeing them grow by the day.”
