presenter Anna Jones interrupted the show to issue a breaking news update on 88, from the Vatican.

She said live on air: “Let me just bring you some breaking news regarding the health of the Pope, who has been in hospital for over two weeks now with double pneumonia.

“The update from the Vatican is that ‘the night was quiet’ and the Pope is still resting”.

“We often get a very brief update at exactly this time of the morning on the Pope’s health and it follows on Friday, the Vatican announcing he had an isolated breathing crisis in hospital.

“Last night we got a bit more detail saying after that day, his condition was still complex but they hadn’t had another crisis. And then this morning’s update was that the night was quiet and the Pope is resting.”

The news comes after the Pope suffered a “breathing crisis” on February 27, with the Vatican confirming he suffered a bronchial spasm, which caused him to breathe in vomit. He was given an oxygen mask on his nose and mouth for the first time, as his respiratory condition “suddenly worsened”.

But the Vatican has confirmed his condition has settled, saying in a statement on Saturday night: “The Holy Father’s clinical condition remains stable.

He is alternating between non-invasive mechanical ventilation and long periods of supplemental high-flow oxygenation, maintaining a good response to gas exchange. The Holy Father does not have a fever and shows no leukocytosis [high white blood cell count].

His haemodynamic parameters have always remained stable; he has continued eat on his own and has regularly undergone respiratory physiotherapy, in which he cooperates actively. He has not experienced any further episodes of bronchospasm.

The Holy Father remains alert and oriented. He received the Eucharist on Saturday afternoon, then devoted himself to prayer. The prognosis remains guarded.”

Meanwhile, a GB News presenter has speculated that the Vatican is trying to quell speculation about his health to avoid mass panic like Princess Kate experienced after her health announcement.

Caroline Farrow said: “I think they want to get on top of the rumour mill, really.

“Because we know we live in a 24/7 information age (and) when there’s a vacuum of information, as we saw with the Princess of Wales last year, (there were) all kinds of outrageous rumours swelling when she didn’t, or circulating even when she when she hadn’t, announced that she had cancer.

“I think part of this is the Vatican trying to take control of the information, and quell the rumours while at the same time letting Catholics know what’s happening in order that they can be informed.”
