King Charles’s bizarre drinking habits revealed by ex-royal butler

has some bizarre tea drinking habits behind closed doors, his ex-royal butler has revealed.

Grant Harrold, who worked for the King when he was the Prince of Wales between 2004 and 2011, has opened up on exactly how the monarch, 76, likes his tea.

According to Harrold, the King has four cups of tea a day, preferring for it to be served in a traditional cup and saucer.

, Harrold also said the monarch avoids putting sugar or sweeteners in his tea, instead deciding to add honey to his coffee when he wants a sweet taste.

Harrold revealed the King also prefers to have his tea in a very particular way, using traditional tea leaves which are stronger.

The green tea drank by His Majesty is also brewed at 70 degrees centigrade, while English Breakfast or Earl Grey is made with boiling water that sits at around 100 degrees.

Harrold told “If you’re being entertained in the presence of the Royal Family or at one of their homes, it’s most likely you will drink out of a teacup and saucer.

“But if you’re in the kitchen with Princess Anne or Kate and William during a less formal visit, you can be sure you’ll be given a mug.

“We used to offer all members of the Royal Family the choice to have sugar or sweeteners – but I must say, I have never seen the Queen or anyone indulge in sugar when having their coffee or tea.”

He continued: “If you’re at the royal home, there will also be a Chinese or Indian tea on offer. Normally an Earl Grey or Assam will be within the selection.

“Tea bags are used from time to time, but royals will definitely prefer tea leaves to a bag. It’s more traditional.”

As well as drinking tea, the King is also reportedly a fan of coffee.
