Once an blooms, it can flower for several months at a time, but getting it to that stage can be tricky.

With spring just around the corner, orchids will emerge from their dormant periods and require regular care once again.

According to an expert, the two most important factors include putting it in the right location and watering it correctly.

Expert florist and passionate gardener David Denyer from told Express.co.uk: “Orchids are typically perceived as intimidating and difficult , but they’re quite manageable once you get the basics right.

“However, during the winter, they might need a little extra care. Light is the key.”

According to the expert, orchids love bright, indirect light, so placing them near a window where the light isn’t too harsh is ideal.

With spring just around the corner, it’s important to avoid placing them in direct sunlight as their leaves could scorch.

In terms of temperature, orchids love to cool down a little at night, so don’t be afraid to let the temperature drop.

The expert explained: “A good rule of thumb is about 10 to 15C cooler at night than during the day.

“Winter air can be really dry, which isn’t ideal for orchids, so if a humidifier is an option, make sure to place it nearby.

“Misting the leaves slightly also helps keep the plant moist, as well as placing it on a tray filled with water and pebbles.”

Keeping the plant in the correct conditions and watering it correctly will all help to encourage it to “bloom.”

When it comes to watering, many people “trip up”, according to the expert and end up giving it too much.

David noted: “Orchids like to dry out in between waterings, so let the soil feel dry before giving them another drink – once a week or every other week is ideal, depending on the variety you have.

“One trick is to put your orchid in the sink, run the water until it pools slightly above the soil, let it drip dry in the sink, and repeat once more.

“This will help ensure the orchid has enough water to last it a week or two.”
