It’s been almost two decades since won his first of 46 ATP Tour titles.

The Brit lifted his maiden trophy at the San Jose Open in 2006, with his now-wife Kim Sears watching on courtside. The pair celebrated his victory with a cheeky kiss.

But Murray’s wife was never meant to attend the tournament, and years later, she revealed that she had told her school she was off sick before getting caught.

Murray recently celebrated the 19-year anniversary of his maiden title. The former world No. 1 was unseeded going into the tournament in San Jose.

But he went on an incredible run, taking out top seed Andy Roddick before defeating Lleyton Hewitt in the final to get his hands on his first trophy.

Almost two decades later, the celebratory scenes of Murray locking lips with Sears remain famous. The video is reposted almost every year, and the three-time Major champion has often joked about the kiss.

“Huge apologies to my now wife for whatever I was doing to her mouth there….. If I was on the receiving end of that I would have dumped me on the spot!” he wrote on last year.

But the kiss wouldn’t have happened if Sears didn’t skive off school to attend the tournament. Once Murray made it all the way to the final, his then-girlfriend had to ask her mum to make an excuse when she didn’t make it home in time for her classes.

“I went away with him thinking it’s fine because he’s never going to win so I’ll be back in time for school on Monday and then he did,” Sears recalled years later.

She was quickly found out when Murray’s maiden title win was splashed across the press.

“I remember saying to my mum, you’ve got to call in and tell them I’ve got the winter vomiting virus and I won’t be in but then it was on the front cover of the paper so I was busted,” Sears added.

It was worth throwing a sickie. Murray and Sears are still together – they got married in 2015 and now have four children together.

To this day, Murray doesn’t make a career move without confiding in his wife. When approached him about a coaching job at the end of last year, the two-time Olympic champion

“My wife (Kim) was very supportive of it. I was actually going to be in Australia anyway for a few days during the tournament,” Murray said when he arrived at the to coach Djokovic.

“She was surprised, obviously, that he’d asked me, but she was really supportive of it.”

Murray has . At the recent Qatar Open, the Serb said Murray would continue to coach him until at least the French Open, also describing their work as “indefinite”.
