Taking to , a social media content creator and certified pediatric sleep consultant Chrissy Lawler, known as The Peaceful Sleeper, shared a “friendly reminder to empty the water resevoir in your washer”.
According to Chrissy, you’re supposed to this “every two to four weeks”. And it only takes “30 seconds”, but helps you keep “everything fresh”.
And it turns out many people had no idea they had to empty or clean this – or even that there was a hidden compartment at all.
:
“Empty the what??? Who let me adult?” asked one person. Another said: “I’m sorry what? I’ve never heard or seen this.” And a third commented: “51 years on earth and I’ve never done this.” Similarly, someone else wrote: “Didn’t even know it existed and I shall continue to pretend I don’t know.”
How to clean washing machine filter
The washing macine pump filer is imporrtant as it protects from a build-up of lint and other items that may have made their way into the machine, such as labels, hair clips or bits of food.
You might find these in the hidden compartment, but there’s also a drain hose which draws excess water out of the machine. After locatating the compartment, which is usually located at the front, under the door, you’ll see a filter.
At the side of the filter, there will be a retractable pipe that allows you to drain this water.
In a recent video, a property expert at Select London showed social media users a step-by-step guide of how to clean their washing machines.
Firstly, the property expert lines a towel under the washing machine, before flipping open a compartment located at the lower end of the front of the washing machine. After opening the flap, it revealed a filter compartment, which needs to be opened and cleaned.
“As soon as I open this you’re going to see the water gushing out. […] Please be warned, it will stink because you’ve got all the dirt that’s been collecting underneath and as you can see right now, as my example, we’ve got hair bands, all kinds of other stuff that you’ll find in there.”
First, she uses antibacterial wipes to clean inside the drainage area. Then she takes the actual filter to the sink and scrubs it with washing up liquid. She then rinses it, and twists it back into place.
The location of the compartment may differ from model to model. Always read the instructions before removing any parts.
