Motorists looking to get behind the wheel of a have been given the best time to buy, with used car dealers getting ready to slash prices.
Whilst the first day of March is often seen as the best day for the , the is also set to see a knock-on effect for .
James Hosking, Director of , suggested that the first days of March 2025 will see a rapid increase in supply on the , with dealers forced to sell existing stock for less.
He explained: “March’s 25-plate change is set to shake up the UK car market, creating opportunities for both new and used car buyers.
“This key moment in the motoring calendar typically fuels fresh demand for brand-new vehicles, as drivers eager for the latest plate head to dealerships. That surge in new car sales also has a knock-on effect, as part-exchanges flood the used market, increasing stock levels and boosting buyer choice.”

Launching on the first day of every March and September, the new set of number plates play a huge role in boosting interest in new cars.
However, with many motorists hoping to be the first on their street with a new ’25-reg’ car, the used car dealerships are set to be flooded with older models, with supply far outstripping demand.
As a result, bargain-loving used car buyers who buy their next model in March could save hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds from dealers looking to shift stock.

Nevertheless, no matter how much of a discount drivers are able to get, James recommended that motorists take the time to compare prices and make all the necessary checks before they get behind the wheel.
He advised: “Buyers should take their time and not rush into a deal. It is important to compare prices across multiple dealerships and look out for pre-registered or nearly-new models that offer big savings over brand-new equivalents.
“With a bit of research and patience, March’s plate change could present a chance to drive away in a high-quality vehicle at a great price.”
According to figures from Cap HPI, the average value of used cars is currently on the rise, with the typical three-year-old model with 60,000 miles on the clock increasing in price by around £40.
However, the average cost of used cars continues to fall, with 12-month-old models dropping in value by a staggering £540, largely due to incentives and discounts to make brand new models more affordable and attractive.
The new number plate could see the typical cost of a used electric model fall further still, helping to make the switch from a petrol or diesel car more affordable than ever.
