There is nothing more alarming than flushing the toilet only for the water to begin rising in the bowl, but you can easily get rid of a blockage with one simple item.

Toilets can become clogged due to too much toilet paper, but it can also be caused by flushing wet wipes, hair, or even kitty litter.

Many people believe that bleach is strong enough to break down a , but not only does this not work, but it will simply put more stress on your system.

Ryan McNicholl, a parts expert from , explained: “Bleach and other chemical cleaners can wear down your pipes over time and cause leaks. DIY fixes – like using a wire coat hanger – might seem like a quick solution, but they can scratch or even gouge the ceramic, leading to expensive repairs.”

Instead,  one effective way to get your toilet flushing properly again is to use clingfilm, which may seem unconventional but can be successful if done properly.

Clingfilm covers the bowl to create a barrier, trapping air and water inside the toilet to create a vacuum effect.

If the clog is caused by too much toilet paper or another type of waste, flushing a toilet covered with clingfilm will push the blockage down the pipe.

Ryan said: “All you need is a roll of clingfilm, and you’re ready to go. Ensure your toilet bowl is clean and dry before you begin.

“Cover it with two to three layers of cling film, ensuring it’s airtight. Once you’re confident it’s secure and won’t move, flush the toilet.

“As the cling film inflates, press down firmly – this will force air back into the toilet, working like a makeshift plunger to clear the blockage.”

This simple method works best for soft blockages such as toilet paper or wet wipes, but it may not work if your toilet regularly becomes clogged.

If clogs keep happening, you should consult a professional to determine whether there are any other plumbing issues in your bathroom.

Be careful what you flush down the toilet and regularly clean it, as limescale can cause blockages and restrict the water flow if allowed to build up inside a bowl.

Ryan said: “If you’re dealing with frequent blockages, it could be a sign that something more serious is happening. Regularly check your pipes and consider using eco-friendly cleaning solutions to avoid potential damage.”
