Soul icon Angie Stone, best known for being one-third of the trio The Sequence, has died in a car crash.

Angie was on her way back from a gig in Alabama in the early hours of Saturday morning (March 1), when she died at the age of 63. Her team confirmed the news to TMZ, and her family and friends are said to be “rocked and devastated” by the news. Her daughter Diamond, also a performer, wrote in a heart-wrenching social media post: “My mommy is gone,” with a series of crying emojis.

Local news site WSFA covered a crash which occurred around 7am local time in Alabama, which is thought to be the one that sadly killed Stone. The outlet reported it involved a “commercial vehicle”, thought to be an 18-wheeler by social media users.

She was reportedly leaving a gig in Montgomery County, Alabama, and heading to Baltimore for a CIAA basketball tournament when the collision took place on Interstate 65, though authorities have not yet confirmed this.

No further details have been released at this time, though tributes have been flooding in for the singer. One X user tweeted: “I was just listening to Angie Stone’s last album, Love Language. Loved how she merged her classic sound with contemporary R&B. May she rest peacefully.” Another added: “Now she’s gone. wtf man… not Angie stone!!! Wtff I am so hurt man. Omg.”

Someone else posted: “The news about Angie Stone is extremely tragic and sad my goodness.” And another fan sobbed: “Rest well Angie stone. She made one the greatest songs uplifting black men.”

Over the course of her incredible career, Angie was nominated for three Grammy Awards, and won two Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards. Her best known tracks include More Than A Woman, Brotha and No More Rain.

After leaving The Sequence, she became a member of RnB trio Vertical Hold and veered into acting – appearing in everything from 2002 comedy flick The Hot Chick to Celebrity Wife Swap. She took to the stage three times – first in 2003 when she played Big Mama Morton in Chicago, and last in Love Lies, playing Victoria Davis.
