As , gardening expert and has issued an important warning for gardeners about a key lawn-care task in March.

Monty, who regularly shares seasonal on his website, said that now is the time to prepare outdoor spaces for the warmer months ahead.

He advised gardeners to focus on maintaining healthy grass rather than battling perceived issues like pests or diseases, as strong grass naturally fends off threats.

One major concern is moss, which Monty warned is a sign of poor drainage, especially in shaded areas.

He explained: “Moss, for example, is always a symptom of poor drainage, made worse by shade.”

To combat this, he recommends aerating the lawn by inserting a fork into the ground and wiggling it every six inches, an essential annual task to improve lawn health.

Monty also suggests raking the lawn to remove dead grass and moss buildup.

He added: “Giving the lawn a good scratch with a wire rake will help clear out thatch and improve growth.”

Mowing habits should also be adjusted for the season.

Monty advised caution: “Avoid mowing when the temperature is below 10°C or if the grass is wet, frozen, or soft.” He also stresses the importance of cutting grass to the right length.

He added: “Put your efforts into healthy grass rather than fighting perceived problems.”

A longer lawn cut, between 2.5 and 4 centimetres, allows the grass to absorb more nutrients, ensuring it stays strong and lush.
