Nothing is worse than pouring milk into your tea or cereal and discovering it has soured overnight. It is likely spoiling quickly if you do not know the best way to store it. Kelsie, an expert from , has shared that many people are making a big mistake by milk in the fridge door compartment.

She said: “Store milk on refrigerator shelves where it is cooler, rather than in the refrigerator doors.” The warmest area of the fridge is around the door since it is constantly being opened and closed, and the temperature change causes milk to spoil faster.

To keep milk fresh, it is best to keep it on the middle shelf where it will stay colder and have a more consistent temperature.

Make sure to also keep milk away from strong-smelling foods in the fridge such as onions as it can pick up odours that can spoil the taste.

The key to keeping milk last longer is making sure it is always kept at a cool and steady temperature, so try to remember not to leave it on your kitchen counter.

Milk is highly perishable, and if kept at room temperature, it can encourage bacteria to grow inside the carton, which is why it always needs to be stored at a cold temperature.

If milk is left out in the kitchen for more than two hours, then it is likely to become spoiled so is better thrown away to avoid becoming ill.

The best temperature to store milk is between 0C and 4C to stay fresh, and if kept at the right temperature, it can last up to a week longer than it normally would.

However, milk will only stay fresh if it is sealed and if you have opened it then it will likely only last a few days no matter how you store it.

Kelsie said: “Once opened, milk is safe to consume for up to three days. This is why it is better to buy smaller amounts more often rather than keeping larger containers open in the refrigerator for too long.”

To make sure you are buying the freshest milk, always pick it up last when at the supermarket so it does not warm up while you are shopping.

Make sure to also buy milk further back on a shelf as it is more likely to be fresher but always check the best before date.

Milk is incredibly easy to store as long as you keep it somewhere cold with a consistent temperature, which is why it is always best to avoid the fridge door.
