masterfully potted two balls at once in what was described as “shot of the century” during his World Open final victory over Joe O’Connor. Higgins, 49, was going in search of his first ranking title in four years. He ended his dismal record in finals over recent years by defeating the Leicester cueman 10-6 in Yushan, China, becoming the second-oldest ranking winner of all time. The Scot made a stunning start to proceedings and while leading 2-0, remarkably sank two reds at the same time, bringing the crowd to their feet in the process.

He attempted a long-range plant that few would have even thought about taking on, with an element of safety in mind also. Higgins’ shot was successful in the red closer to the pocket falling after nudging another red onto it, but having played it with enough topspin that the target ball also fell into the same pocket, while opening up the table.

However, TNT Sports commentator Alan McManus noted that Higgins may not have intended on potting both balls.

“I don’t know if that’s exactly what he played, but if it was, it’s the shot of the century,” McManus declared.

The camera then panned to Higgins with a wry smile on his face, with McManus convinced his verdict was true as a result: “[He’s got] a smile on his face thinking, ‘How did I do that?’”

“It was so good he got two,” added co-commentator Dave Hendon.

With the reds open, the shot was enough to all-but secure a third-frame victory as he stamped authority over his 29-year-old opponent who was gunning for a first ranking title.

Higgins went on to complete the victory, before bagging the first and only century of the final in the 16th and final frame, before lauding the tournament and O’Connor.

When asked in the ceremony what impressed him about Yushan, Higgins replied: “Just everything, the people, the sponsors they have been fantastic all week, and the fans…

“I just want to say to Joe, Joe has had a fantastic week and he just didn’t play his best today. It was lucky for me, but he is a great player and I congratulate him.”

Higgins had earlier revealed that as her flight to Hong Kong was at the same time as the final, but will be relieved to inform her that he has broken his final duck when she touches down ahead of the World Grand Prix.
