Piers Morgan ‘fat-shaming’

Jack stunned BRIT Awards viewers in 2019 when he “fat-shamed” amid his feud with Little Mix. The journalist had criticised the girl group after they stripped naked for one of their photoshoots.

Jack told Little Mix: “. He didn’t like that picture where you stripped off naked. Which is weird because four chins and voluptuous breasts; it must have been like looking in a mirror.”

The girls gasped in shock and awkwardly laughed, and the joke didn’t go down well with Piers.

The former Good Morning Britain host tweeted: “Shocked and disappointed to see @LittleMix LAUGH as @jackwhitehall fat-shames me on national television.

“It’s just this kind of public negative body image mockery that the same @LittleMix campaigned against and of which I am now a victim. Shame on you, ladies… And as for chins, at least I’ve got some, you chinless little weed @jackwhitehall.”

Awkward Liam Payne and Cheryl joke

Jack began the awkward exchange by joining Cheryl and her then-partner, Liam Payne, at their table and referring to Liam as Cheryl’s “plus one”.

At the 2018 awards, the comedian then asked them how their “date night” was going and said he had a big question for them.

“I know it’s past his bedtime, but is the little fella watching at home?” seemingly referring to their young son, Bear.

He told them to give him a wave before adding, “Hello Niall,” referring to Liam’s One Direction bandmate, Niall Horan.

The cringeworthy interview took another turn when the former couple made a racy bedroom confession. Whitehall told Liam: “You’re performing later, you’re doing a performance from the Fifty Shades movie, it sounds pretty saucy – is there a safe word?”

Payne pointed at Cheryl and joked: “She knows that.” Cheryl then leaned into the microphone and said that the safe word is “don’t stop”, leaving Jack speechless.

Liam Payne ‘boxing match’

The following year, Jack Whitehall reportedly faced the wrath of Liam Payne and Naomi Campbell for making a cheeky joke about their short-lived romance.

The late One Direction star was presenting an award with model Winnie Harlow. Jack introduced him to the stage saying: “Now it’s time for our next award. To present it, a supermodel and supermodel Naomi Campbell’s current squeeze.

“His surname’s Payne, which is what he’ll be in a world of if he crosses her — it’s Liam Payne and Winnie Harlow.”

Liam later said that the joke got him in trouble with Campbell. He told The Sun: “Someone I happened to be with, that was the person that he mentioned at the Brit Awards, went in on him for saying that joke at the Brits.

“I take it as a joke, it is what it is, but she was not happy. Jack, you got me in a lot of s**t that night. So me and you are going to do a charity boxing match.”

Calling out the BRITs themselves

In 2020, Jack joined a host of stars calling out the lack of female nominees at the BRIT Awards. The awards faced criticism that year for not including any women in the Album of the Year or Group of the Year categories.

Introducing the Best Female Solo Artist category, Jack joked: “Environmental issues have been a big theme of awards show this year. And in the spirit of sustainability, the Brits have been recycling all the same excuses for why so few women were nominated.”
