Call the Midwife star exposes ‘epidemic’ of show cancellations as she leaves show

star Megan Cusack has lamented the “epidemic” of cancellations of popular shows as she discussed the success of the long running period drama.

Speaking exclusively to and other media in advance of this season the Irish star, who is , said: “It’s this whole thing of streaming services canceling things that are popular anyway.

“And this is going away from talking about the show (Call the Midwife) in itself, but it feels like an epidemic, and it’s horrible at the moment.

“These shows that people put their time, effort and love into, be it, behind the scenes, in front of the camera, all of that, and they put the blood, sweat and tears into it and things like are canceling shows that are doing very well.

“So I think we’re very lucky to be part of the , that continues to want their shows to thrive past just an initial popularity,” she said.

“And I think that’s what one of the reasons why it continues to be popular, because people get to grow with it and get to fall in love with characters and get to recognise themselves in characters, or their friends and family.

“You don’t get that when you’re just given a series. People aren’t being allowed to fall in love with shows the way that they have been in previous years.

“We are given the space to do that very luckily. And I think that contributes massively to the popularity, because it is steadfast and is there and it’s reliable, it comes back to easy comfort (viewing) at the start of the year,” she said.

Megan recently announced she is leaving the programme after four years. She originally made her entrance in the show’s tenth season with her character, single mum Nancy Corrigan, stepping in for Valerie Dyer (played by Jennifer Kirby), who departed Nonnatus House for a new opportunity at the Hope Clinic in South Africa.

In an interview with , she confirmed her departure saying: “Sometimes, you’ve got to step out of your comfort zone to grow. I’ve learnt so much, but I’m at the start of my career, and I need to take a leap of faith.

“It’s bittersweet, really. I’ve made lifelong friendships there, and I get to take those with me.

“But when I think about not rocking up to set and seeing Tim, who’s part of the grips team, with his guitar hanging out of his van and serenading people at half six in the morning. It really has been like a family.”

The character is set to get a lavish send off as she marries Roger Noble (Conor O’Donnell) with all of the Poplar midwives in attendance.
