Tragic Gene Hackman report interrupted by huge BBC blunder as host forced to apologise

The couple were discovered dead at their Santa Fe home on Thursday and while police have opened an investigation into their deaths, they have indicated that .

Viewers were updated with the details of the investigation in a pre-recorded segment, concluding with an image of the two time Oscar-winning actor.

However, the picture remained on screen as Charlie, 62, attempted to move on to the next story, referring to a controversial documentary about Gaza which was narrated by the son of a senior Hamas leader.

Gene’s photograph remained on screen as Charlie said: “The has apologised for serious flaws in the production of a documentary about the war in Gaza.”

Realising the error, Stayt began to stutter as he continued: “Apologies, let’s just get, err, that bit straightened out.” The image was eventually removed but as Charlie began to delve into details about the documentary, they suffered another technical issue as a correspondent in Kyiv appeared on screen waiting to share his report.

According to a police search warrant, Gene, Betsy and their dog and appeared to have been “dead for some time”.

The couple suffered no “no external trauma”, preliminary findings from a medical investigation found. Gene’s daughters, Leslie and Elizabeth, released a formal statement about the tragic passing of their father and his wife.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy,” they said in a statement, per .

“He was loved and admired by millions around the world for his brilliant acting career, but to us he was always just Dad and Grandpa. We will miss him sorely and are devastated by the loss.”

The pair believe the iconic actor and his wife could have died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Elizabeth and Leslie are two of Hackman’s three children from his marriage to Faye Maltese. They former couple, who were married from 1956 to 1986 also share a son named Christopher.

Gene went on to marry Betsy, a classical pianist, in 1991.
