“We started talking to Marc Jacobs about two years ago. It was always a brand that we were looking forward to having here at the centre,” says Thurlow. “They have been doing some expansion across Canada, and this will be the first store in Western Canada that we’re really excited to have.”

Opened in 2015, the outlet mall has welcomed an increasing number of higher-priced fashion brands. Most of these, Thurlow explains, are located along the “centre spine” of the Richmond shopping centre.

“When you walk in at the front of the centre, straight down the middle of the centre is all about premium, the luxury brands,” he shares.

With store occupancy currently sitting at 99 per cent, Thurlow says they’re aiming to further expand the centre in order to accommodate the interest from brands looking to open an outlet store at the Vancouver airport-area centre.

“There are brands that we have talked to for three, four, fives years before they open and lease negotiations also take a long time,” Thurlow says of the continuing interest. “It’s our philosophy, and my own philosophy, to wait to make sure that you have the right brand in the right space. Because you don’t want to have to move somebody later down the road.”

With a 70 per cent local and 30 per cent tourist split among the shopping mall’s visitors, Thurlow says the centre plans to continue business as usual amid the continuing tariff threats from the U.S.

“It goes back to having that mix of great American brands, European brands, Canadian brands. They’re all here. So there is an option for everybody,” Thurlow says. “No matter how their political feelings may be.”
