Cleaning expert and director Nigel Bearman confirmed that this unexpected hack is in fact backed by science.
He said: “Listerine contains a combination of alcohol and essential oils that have antibacterial and anti-fungal properties—these properties help to kill bacteria, germs and can even eliminate mould spores.”
He also noted that any inexpensive ethanol-based mouthwash could work just as well, making this an incredibly cost-effective alternative to professional mould removal services, which can cost up to £1200.
How to remove mould with Listerine:
To try this at home, all you need is a cloth, a spray bottle and ethanol-based mouthwash.
Dilute your solution by using one part mouthwash to three parts water and pour into your spray bottle.
Lightly spray the solution onto the affected areas, being careful not to over-saturate the area.
Let the solution sit for five to ten minutes before removing the mould using a clean cloth.
Repeat this process once every few days until the mould has completely disappeared and ensure the room is well-ventilated to reduce the risk of further growth.
