‘Heartbreaking’ new Netflix series watched 31,000,000 times in one week

Netflix’s new series, American Murder: Gabby Petito, has left viewers feeling “heartbroken” and “infuriated” since its release in February.

The three-part documentary, which is the first instalment of the American Murder true-crime series, has been streamed over 31 million times this week alone. It tells the tragic story of Gabby Petito’s disappearance.

The programme delves into the final days of Gabby’s life, featuring interviews with her loved ones. Gabby vanished during a US road trip in August 2021 and was found dead a month later.

Her fiance, Brian Laundrie, returned to Florida without her and later confessed to her murder in a notebook before taking his own life.

Gabby and Brian had set off on a cross-country road trip on 2 July 2021, which Gabby documented for her new YouTube channel. She was last seen alive on 27 August in Wyoming, while Brian returned to his family’s home on 1 September, refusing to cooperate with authorities, reports .

The series includes Gabby’s travel vlog recordings from the days leading up to her death and previously unseen police body camera footage from one of her and Brian’s road trips. The couple had given statements to officers following allegations of a physical altercation witnessed by a bystander.

The series has deeply affected viewers, with many expressing their thoughts on the tragedy via social media.

Viewers have been left gutted by the deeply moving documentary on , with one person posting on X: “The Gabby Petito doc is absolutely heartbreaking and infuriating,” and another adding: “Anyone else watch the Gabby Petito documentary on ? Absolutely heartbreaking.”

A further comment read: “Just watched the Gabby Petito doc on . What an absolutely heartbreaking story. As someone acutely familiar with DV from personal experience it was hard to watch. I applaud her parents for telling her story in the way they did, in hopes it will help someone else.”

The film also prompted reactions such as “gutting” while a different viewer shared that it “broke my heart into pieces”.
