Canadian lawmaker Charlie Angus recently declared that Donald Trump’s wave of attacks toward Canada are “destroying what’s left” of a “MAGA maple” movement up north.
“We’re going to see the conservative numbers in Canada drop a lot more because people are looking at Project 2025, they’re looking at the rage and destruction that Donald Trump is unleashing,” said Angus in an interview published this week with Ben Meiselas of the MeidasTouch Network.
“And the alienation that he’s creating around the world and Canadians are thinking, ‘OK, if this is what MAGA looks like, there’s no damn way we’re going to vote for it in Canada.’”
The remarks by Angus — a member of the Canadian Parliament and part of the left-leaning New Democratic Party — arrived after Meiselas aired a graphic that an X user called “one of the most astonishing polling charts” they’ve ever seen.
The graphic depicts polling ahead of the 2025 election and shows a sharp decline in support for Canada’s right-of-center Conservative Party compared to a double-digit jump in support for the ruling Liberal Party led by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced that he was resigning early last month.
The dramatic shift in Canada’s political landscape arrives after the U.S. president hit the country with “51st state” insults and threats of tariffs, the latter of which he plans to impose starting Tuesday.
The shift in opinion polling has been described as a “major comeback” for the Liberals against their rival Conservatives, whose populist leader Pierre Poilievre has been likened to Trump in ads by the opposing party, Reuters reported.
Angus, earlier in the interview, thanked Trump for doing Canadians a “favor” in contributing to the decline in the Conservatives’ popularity.
“Pierre Poilievre and his politics are toxic. It’s hate politics. It’s the pitchfork politics of blame and hate and rage,” Angus said.
“And I always felt that Canadians weren’t going to go there, but once Elon Musk tells Canadians how much he likes Pierre Poilievre, well you can bet that that’s going to kill the conservative brand.”
