Spring is almost upon us, and a great way to usher in the season is to rethink your habits around the home.

If something isn’t working for you, then now is the perfect time to change it up for something that’ll benefit you more.

A common problem that people face around the home is dry and scratchy towels, which are often caused by a build-up of or fabric softener.

However, even if you’ve not got a you can still maintain that soft and fluffy feel of brand new towels by simply changing the way that you store them.

That’s according to Molly Freshwater, Founder of Secret Linen Store, who has lifted the lid on how to prevent rock-hard towels – which are never pleasant to dry yourself with.

If you live somewhere that doesn’t have a lot of storage space or your towels are crammed into a cupboard or shelf, you might want to consider a different storage solution.

According to the expert, folding towels too tightly or stacking them under heavy piles can flatten the fibres, making them feel stiff over time.

To keep them soft and absorbent, store them loosely with some space for air to circulate. This helps maintain their fluffiness and keeps them fresher for longer.

Don’t miss… [UPDATE]

Similarly, over-crowding your towels in the washing machine can also spell disaster for maintaining their texture.

The expert said: “It might feel easier to just toss all the family’s bath towels into the wash at once, but this won’t actually help with softness or cleanliness.

“When there are too many towels in the machine, the detergent and fabric conditioner can’t rinse out properly. For the best results, try washing your towels in smaller loads.

“This way, the detergent gets a chance to properly rinse out, leaving your towels feeling soft, fluffy, and ready to use after every wash.”

And finally, a tumble dryer can be great for softening towels, but it can also make them rough over time.

The experts recommend drying your towels on a low heat setting so they’re not completely dried out, or hanging them outside on a windy day.

If you’re using a tumble dryer, try adding a tennis ball or dryer ball to speed up drying and fluff up your towels.
