The most watched TV series you’ve never heard of as fans praise ‘incredible’ drama

Despite the influx of streaming platforms and a constant stream of new content, one TV show has managed to stand out from the crowd. The Chosen, which began as a crowdfunding project, has become one of the most viewed dramas worldwide.

Over time, the series’ success has grown exponentially, with the show now available on its own free app and on major streaming platforms. The Christian historical drama, which tells the story of Jesus (played by Jonathan Roumie) and his disciples, has captivated audiences since its debut in 2017.

By January 2024, The Chosen had reportedly amassed 770 million episode views and 200 million viewers, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, making it the most translated show ever, even surpassing Baywatch. For comparison, ‘s most popular show, Wednesday, has approximately 250 million views, while Stranger Things season four has 140 million views.

Furthermore, The Chosen continues to perform well on streaming platforms such as Peacock, Prime Video and . Fans can look forward to season five, titled The Chosen: Last Supper, hitting cinemas this Easter.

The upcoming episodes of the popular series will depict the people of welcoming Jesus as their king, with his disciples preparing for his coronation. However, Rome and various political leaders are determined to thwart Jesus permanently, reports the .

The fifth season will be released in three parts in North America and Canada – the first two episodes will hit theatres on March 28; part two (episodes three to five) will arrive on April 4; and part three (episodes six to eight) will be released on April 11. Fans have been effusive in their praise for the show after the trailer for season five was released, with one commenting on X: “This looks incredible, I’m looking forward to watching Season 5, I know it will be powerful and moving as were the other Seasons [sic].”

Another fan exclaimed: “Whoa! April feels so far away. I am SO excited for this season! [sic]” A third viewer shared: “Oh my goodness. I am excited to watch this, yet heartbroken at the same time because I know what is coming. PRAISE GOD, we Know the final outcome is Victory [sic].”

The Chosen has also received a high rating of 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter, which compiles ratings from viewers.

The success of the Bible series has paved the way for other faith-based projects, with set to premiere globally on Prime Video on February 27. The eight-part series is produced by the Wonder Project, a company that specialises in telling faith-based stories.

Dallas Jenkins, the creator, writer, and director of The Chosen, serves as an adviser to the company.
