Pro- protesters destroyed the Union Jack flag in front of police officers and counter-protesters.

During a demonstration in Manchester on Saturday, crowds began ripping segments of the flag and waving them in celebration.

The action has since sparked fury with calls for treating the national flag in such a way to be made “illegal”.

Speaking to , journalist Suzanne Evans angrily said: “I’m generally not the sort of person that’s in favour of banning things, but it is our national flag. I don’t think you should be allowed to burn it.

“I’d go a little bit further. Actually, I don’t think we should be having any flags flown on public buildings apart from the Union Flag.”

Ms Evans highlighted that the desecration of any flags and religious texts is “offensive”, and that all such acts should be condemned.

Referencing the case of a man who burned a Quran at the memorial to the Manchester Arena bombing victims earlier this month, she said burning the Quran is a “really stupid, crass thing to do”.

The protest last weekend saw hundreds of Stand Up To Racism demonstrators take to the streets following a UKIP rally. Scenes in Manchester rapidly erupted into chaos, causing police to intervene to keep the two sides apart.

UKIP leader Nick Tenconi and his party were calling for “mass-deportations”, with an online post stating: “‘We are taking our country back one city at a time.'”

However, supporters of the other group marched along and chanted: “Say it loud and say it clear. Refugees are welcome here.”

They were seen to hold LGBTQ and Palestinian flags, while others held up banners with the words “stop the far right”.
