With just days to go before the Oscars, bosses are in a race against time to get the red carpet rolled out. As our exclusive pictures show, the site is currently a chaotic mess with workmen frantically filling in gaping holes in the floor and patching up the walls.

The famous Oscar statuettes are covered in bubble wrap, and the floor is overlaid with plastic to preserve the colour.

On Sunday, millions around the world will watch stars such as Demi Moore and Adrien Brody descend on the illustrious walkway.

The red carpet is actually laid down on a less-than-salubrious side street attached to a parking lot. It is then covered with a temporary structure which comes down again the day after the ceremony at the Dolby Theatre.

An onlooker said: “It’s in a bit of a rough area to say the least but the celebs are ferried to the entrance by a fleet of cars so they are usually blissfully unaware.”

However, this wasn’t quite the case last year, which was marred by protests over the Palestine and war.

Similar protests could erupt this time round, and bosses would be keen to avoid a repeat of some nominees having to leave their cars to walk the 200 meters to the red carpet start.

A source said: “It was very embarrassing that they couldn’t ensure the nominees’ safety. Some even arrived late into the auditorium.

“They will be liaising with the police to have another contingency plan in place should that be needed. There are no indicators of any protests this year but they aren’t taking anything for granted.”

The red carpet this year will also feature the “secret tunnel” which debuted last year. It is a corridor that runs behind the first section of the red carpet and is filled with make-up artists and PRs who can’t be in the shot of the cameras but need to be on hand for the celebrity clients.

A source added: “The talent need their army of people behind the scenes but crucially out of shot when it comes to the global audience.

“It’s a claustrophobic little tunnel they can all walk down behind the scenes. It’s certainly very cosy in there but the celebs would rather their flunkeys in there than sharing the limelight.”

The Oscars will air live on ITV Sunday from 10.30pm.
