The energy bills for an average household are set to rise even further with an increase of £100 a year in April due to Ofgem’s new cap.

With the average heating bill in the UK currently £106 a month, this rise places more pressure on millions of people’s finances, especially with the crisis continuing alongside this bill rise.

However, Joshua Houston, a boiler expert at GreenMatch, offers some simple tips to offset some of this increase in energy bills with one simple method saving you £120 a year.

Joshua explained: “The increase in heating costs leaves us with less disposable income. But there are ways in which you can save a little bit of money.”

He added: “By following these three tips, you will save yourself over £700 a year, which more than offset the energy bill increase.”

Reduce the boiler temperature

Reducing your boiler’s ‘flow temperature’ can lead to a saving of £120 per year. Joshua explains: “It allows your boiler to work more efficiently by using less energy to heat your home. You will also likely not notice a difference if the temperature is reduced by between 3-5°C.”

This tip can save you around 10% on your end-of-month bill, which equates to £10, and due to the low effort required, it is a super easy way to keep money in your pocket.

Insulate your boiler

Insulating your boiler will ensure that it retains heat, meaning you will use less fuel to generate steam. An insulation jacket can be purchased for as little as £20, and will save you around £10 per month, so you’ll have made that money back in just a couple of months.

These savings add up to £120 a year, and alongside reducing your energy bills it will also improve the safety of your boiler, as it will provide a layer to protect people (especially children) from burns.

Use thermostatic radiator valves

Using thermostatic radiator valves will save you a whopping £480 a year. These will allow you to control the temperature of each individual room, meaning you will avoid wasting money heating rooms that you are not using, instead allowing you to focus on the living areas you regularly use.

Joshua added: “If you don’t already have the valves, they can be bought for under £10 each. They provide a saving of up to 40% on your energy bill, which equates to £40 a month.”
