after the nation’s Falklands War veterans accused the country’s ambassador to the UK of “inaction” over the islands and of being “pro-British”.
Argentine military in the 1982 conflict, but the South American nation has never given up its claim to the South Atlantic archipelago, it calls Islas Malvinas.
Mariana Plaza has been announced as the new ambassador from Argentina to the UK and Her Excellency was introduced to King Charles III on February 11.
But back home there has been outrage from some veterans who claim Ms Plaza has taken no action to forward claims over the Falkland Islands and that she is too “pro-British”.
The Malvinas Veterans’ Centre of La Plata has questioned the Argentine Senate’s decision to approve the promotion Ms Plaza.

Last week, the Senate approved the promotion of career diplomats Mariana Plaza, serving as ambassador to the United Kingdom since May 2024, and her husband Carlos Gonzalo Ortíz de Zárate, Plaza’s deputy at the embassy.
Veterans’ groups point to the lack of a comprehensive policy by President Javier Milei’s government on the Malvinas issue, ranging from President Javier Milei’s admiration for Margaret Thatcher to cuts in medication for those who fought in the war.
At the end of January, a British plane took off from the Malvinas Islands and entered Argentine territory without authorisation. “There is no protest against the militarisation of the South Atlantic,” explained Ernesto Alonso, Human Rights Secretary of the La Plata Veterans Centre (CECIM), to El Destape.

He continued: “The Argentine Nation reaffirms its legitimate and inalienable sovereignty over the Malvinas, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands and their corresponding maritime and insular spaces, as they are an integral part of the national territory.”
“She was given the position because she will fulfil the national Government’s policy, this is a deep accumulation of surrender policies that are part of Milei’s government.”
Another Argentine senator, María Eugenia Duré from Tierra del Fuego strongly criticised the ambassador’s appointment.
She said: “What La Libertad Avanza is doing right now and those who support it is voting for those who are de-malvinising our country.
“La Libertad Avanza, with these two ambassadorial promotions, is once again highlighting the systematic surrender of Argentine sovereignty over our Malvinas Islands.
“The UP bloc will not vote for any official who is pro-British or who supports surrendering our sovereignty or land.”
