Philip Glenister made an emotional admission about raising his two children with his wife, Beth Goddard.

The couple met at a birthday party for fellow actor Jamie Glover in 1997. They share two daughters, Millie, born in 2002, and Charlotte, born in 2005. Philip and Beth tied the knot one year after welcoming their second daughter and have been happily married for nearly two decades.

Beth, 55, has appeared in various TV shows over the years, including Endeavour, Lewis, Outlander, Doc Martin and Call the Midwife.

She is perhaps best known for playing Suze Littlewood in the comedy series, Gimme Gimme Gimme, while Philip, 62, is famed for his role as DCI Gene Hunt in Life on Mars.

Despite remaining private about his personal life, Philip opened up about his life with his wife and children during an interview with The Guardian in 2012.

Philip, who has returned to screens in the rebooted series of Bergerac, heaped praise on his wife as he explained how she often has to parent alone because of his busy work schedule.

He said: “Bringing up children in this day and age is a tough responsibility but I’m very lucky because my wife is amazing.

“I have to give her the credit because I’m mostly away working, so a lot of the time she’s a one-parent family, which is the hardest thing of all. It might sound all politically correct but she is extraordinary.”

He continued: “When people say our kids are great it’s lovely, because that’s testament to Beth. Because we’ve got two girls, I’m a big soft dad and they wrap me round their little fingers, to be uncurled by Mum.

“That Beth has combined being a mum with her own career is all the more impressive. I don’t see how having children isn’t the defining thing of anyone’s life.”

In the six-part reboot of Bergerac, Philip is portraying Arthur Wakefield, a wealthy business owner whose daughter-in-law is murdered.

The revamped series sees Irish actor Damien Molony step into the shoes of the troubled Jersey detective Jim Bergerac. The drama brought Philip back to Jersey more than three decades after he starred in the original drama’s finale.

Referring back to his minor role, Philip told Express.co.uk and other press: “It was one of my first ever jobs. I left drama school in 1990 so it would have been literally one of my first jobs.”

He added: “I just remember having two weeks in Jersey and having a good time, to be honest.”

He recalled the warmth of John Nettles, who originated the role of Jim Bergerac in the ’80s, noting: “And John was absolutely lovely. I remember he took us out for this very posh meal at this very posh restaurant on the other side of Jersey.”
