Diana Taurasi is embracing her life at home with wife Penny Taylor and their two kids, Leo and Isla.
On Feb. 25, the WNBA legend announced in an interview with Time she was retiring from basketball.
“Mentally and physically, I’m just full,” she said. “That’s probably the best way I can describe it. I’m full and I’m happy.”
Taurasi, a six-time Olympic gold medalist and a star for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, said she’s excited for the next chapter in her life.
“I really enjoy taking my kids to school, being home when they’re home, not leaving for a week at a time,” she said.
Like her wife, Taylor, who retired from basketball in 2016, has also gone to the Olympics and made a name for herself in the basketball world.

Penny Taylor is a WNBA legend
Taylor is a three-time WNBA champion, as well as a three-time WNBA All-Star. She played for over a decade in the WNBA, mostly with the Mercury.
According to the official website for the Mercury, Taylor was intrigued to meet Taurasi when Taurasi became the top overall draft pick for the team in 2004. Taurasi, in return, felt a lot of enthusiasm meeting Taylor.
“It’s an instant thing,” Taylor said of becoming acquainted with Taurasi. “You just feel like a part of her family the minute you meet her. … It was just kind of shocking, in a way, to see someone who was that energetic and dynamic.”
Taylor retired from basketball in 2016. In 2022, she was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame and into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2023.
Penny Taylor has two Olympic medals
Taylor has gone to the Olympics three times representing Team Australia — in 2004, when she won a silver medal, again in 2008, when she won her second silver medal, and in 2016, when she didn’t take home a medal.
Penny Taylor was married before
Taylor was previously married to volleyball player Rodrigo Gil.
Taylor ended up finding love again with Taurasi, and in 2017, they got married in Phoenix. For the event, Taurasi wore a stunning white suit and Taylor donned a gorgeous white gown.
“It was the most amazing and beautiful day of our lives,” Taurasi told People at the time. “To be able to share our love with family and close friends meant the world to us.”

Taylor and Taurasi are proud parents of two. In 2018, they welcomed their son, Leo, and then their daughter, Isla, in 2021.
In a 2024 interview with Parents, Taurasi raved about her wife’s parenting skills.
“I’ve been so lucky. Penny is the best mom in the world. She is really incredible,” she said.
Taurasi also talked about her kids and said they’re different from each other.
“Leo complains. He can tell we want him to play so we’ve done a 180 and don’t talk about it. And he’ll ask, ‘When’s basketball practice?’ And we’ll say, ‘We’ll go if you want,'” she said.
“Then the little one is two and a half. You can tell she’s an athlete. She has a way about her; she’s very physical and loves to climb. But at the end of the day, they’ll pick their path of what they love to do. And if it’s basketball, I would obviously enjoy that,” Taurasi added.
