The UK city named as Britain’s ‘unhealthiest’ with high obesity rates and most smokers

An English city has been given the title of thanks to its high obesity and smoking rates.

, the largest city in Yorkshire, has been named and shamed as the most unhealthy city in the UK, according to a recent study by D which examined unhealthy lifestyle habits across UK cities and towns using eight metrics. 

The research combined direct health indicators such as obesity rates, smoking prevalence and physical inactivity.

Alcohol consumption patterns were also taken into account whilst researchers also factored in access to nutritionists and fast food search behaviour.

Each city and town received a final score reflecting overall lifestyle health, with higher scores indicating less healthy patterns.

With a shocking score of 100, Leeds has the lowest percentage of physically active adults.

The city records a concerning 78% physical inactivity rate among adults whilst obesity affects 64% of the population.

Leeds also has the highest average percentage of current smokers in the UK – with 26% of residents smoking.

Blackpool follows shortly behind in second place with an equally high score of 98. A mere six per 100K residents have access to nutrition professionals whilst the city has a 72% obesity rate.

The seaside town is also one of the heaviest drinking in the UK, with 11% of adults consuming alcohol five or more days a week.

Rounding up the top three – with a score of 95 – is Liverpool. Clinical data also indicates that 15% of residents exceed recommended alcohol intake thresholds there.

Residents in the maritime city in northwest England also appear to have a sedentary lifestyle with a score of 73%.

Scoring 94 – and placing fourth – is Bradford, which matches Leeds’ shocking 26% smoking rate, making it one of the worst cities in the country for tobacco use. Just 13 registered nutritionists are available and 68% of residents are obese.

Kingston upon Hull is fifth – with a score of 87 – and has less nutritionists available than Bradford with just 11. It also has a higher obesity rate than Bradford with a score 71%, 16% of residents also exceed recommended alcohol units, making it the highest among the top five unhealthiest cities. 

The Express has approached Leeds City Council for comment.
