Former star Sepp van den Berg has admitted that he ‘dreams’ of returning to Anfield in the future. The defender departed to Brentford last summer after growing frustrated with his lack of game time, but has not ruled out moving back to Merseyside.
Van den Berg has impressed for the Bees this season and would be silly to rule out a return for the Dutchman.
With , and Virgil van Dijk potentially leaving this summer, may be even more inclined to bring back familiar faces who can make an instant impact.
Express Sport looks at some of their options.
Sepp van den Berg
Van den Berg told Voetbal Primeur: “I would be lying if I said that I did not dream of returning to one day. That is still on my mind. But for now, it was better for my career to take a different path and play a lot.
“I am doing that now and that allows me to develop as well as possible. After the preparation, indicated that I had done so well that they wanted me to stay. But I did not really see that myself. It was all my choice – I am happy that I now play in the Premier League every week.”
The 23-year-old played only four times for ’s first team but Anfield chiefs will surely have monitored his progress in west London.

Fabio Carvalho
There could be plenty of sense in re-signing attacking midfielder Carvalho, who also joined Brentford last summer. Former boss was unconvinced by the Portugal youth international but Slot might view him as a solid option.
Carvalho can play anywhere across the forward line and in midfield. If Salah departs, will not find a single player able to match his output. They will need better strength in depth next season.
Neco Williams
Williams always impressed in a shirt but found the challenge of displacing Alexander-Arnold too grand. But if the England star departs, there could be a place at Anfield for the now-Nottingham Forest full-back.
The 23-year-old has played a key role in Forest’s hugely impressive season and his versatility means he can play at right-back and left-back – with the latter role also a problem position for .

Takumi Minamino
An excellent squad option under Klopp, Minamimo left Anfield in 2022 for increased game time at Monaco. The Japan international has performed well in France and is now a hugely experienced player at 30.
While he would not quite fit into ’s usual recruitment criteria, Minamino could be a good addition if he was prepared to play a more diminished role again.
Raheem Sterling
Sterling’s time at the top of the Premier League seems over after a tough season on loan at . But it would be poetic for the 30-year-old to revive the twilight of his career at , where he first burst onto the scene aged 17.
A difficult relationship with the fanbase – caused by his move to a decade ago – could be resolved if Sterling returns to Anfield and starts banging in the goals again.
