It’s fair to say everybody finds themselves with lots of leftover packaging from time to time.
But, you don’t always have to put it into your recycling bags, as it can be used in so many other different ways. One good thing it’s brilliant for is your .
According to expert, Ish, known as gardening.with.ish on , there are a few things packaging can be essential for when it comes to boosting your garden. One of them is the humble plastic bottle.
Plastic bottles
Ish says they can make amazing mini propagators. All you need to do is cut the top off so that the bottle is able to open up. Then, add in a little bit of soil, and plant your seeds.
If you pop the lid back on top he said it will create a “nice humid environment” that holds in the heat and the moisture, which will aid in getting your seedlings started.
Don’t miss…
Egg cartons
If you pull egg cartons apart he said you can be left with individual pots, and they decompose “incredibly well” in the soil. He explained you can start your seeds off and plant them directly into the ground without any root distrubance.
He said the roots will grow through the container so it works quite well. It’s a simple way to make use of your packaging.
Salad trays
Ish uses these for checking the viability of any old or expired seeds. He takes a layer of kitchen roll, and places it in the bottom of the tray to let it soak in water.
Once it’s absorbed the water, he sprays in the extra seeds that have expired before covering it over with the kitchen roll. This will create a “moist and humid environment” to get them started, and he’ll be able to pick out which ones are doing quite well and plant them up.
This way he’s not wasting any seeds and he can use the ones that still have some life in them. It’s a great way to try and avoid waste.
The video has been viewed hundreds of times since it was shared, and people were quick to comment too. They seem to love Ish’s nifty ideas.
One person said: “I’ve been using ‘Too Good To Go’ containers to make mini propagators. Saving food and the planet!”
Another replied: “I’ve been doing this. Kitchen looks like the recycling centre.”
A third added: “Ish, this is such useful information as I have a lot of old seeds. I was going to throw them out, now I’m going to try what you said. Thank you once again.”
Meanwhile, a fourth also commented: “Not much will be going to the recycling anymore!”
