A doctor revealed that he eats one “” daily for gut and liver health.
It also helps control , reduces bloating, and may even lower the risk of colon cancer, he says.
Dr Joseph Salhab, a board-certified gastroenterologist known as @thestomachdoc on , shared a video highlighting the benefits of eating dates every day.
His post gained a lot of traction, as he boasts an impressive following of 1.9 million users who tune in for his health tips.
“I eat two dates every single day for my gut and liver health, and here’s why,” Dr Salhab explained.

“First, it’s low on the glycemic index, which means it’s blood sugar-friendly.
“Second, it increases two of the most beneficial gut bacteria, bifidobacterium and lactobacilli, so it works as a prebiotic.”
He continued listing its benefits, noting that dates are “bloat-friendly” due to their low FODMAP content, can help improve constipation, and may contribute to a lower risk of colon cancer.
“People who eat more dates may have a lower risk of colon cancer because of its polyphenol content and because it helps good bacteria make a compound called butyrate, which is protective against colon cancer.”
Studies have found dates may reduce the chances of colon cancer. in the US cited a study with results suggesting dates and other dried fruits may have this effect.
Beyond digestive benefits, dates may also help reduce the risk of fatty liver disease.
“Because of the polyphenol and antioxidant content, people who eat more dates may have a lower risk of fatty liver disease,” Dr Salhab noted.

“Open up a date, add some walnuts inside, and it makes a great healthy snack, especially in the morning.”
