Call the Midwife creator says series will be ‘rested’ as fans devastated

is set to be ‘rested’, says creator Heidi Thomas.

But a prequel could already be in the works, set to show the formative years of Trixie Franklin. Currently portrayed by Helen George in the One drama, this new series would focus on a younger actress, likely in her teens or early twenties, to capture Trixie’s initial experiences and development.

The narrative is expected to transition from the seventies, where the original series is currently set, back to the fifties – when Trixie was embarking on her adult life and starting her career in nursing.

This exploration offers an exciting opportunity to delve into her character’s origins and showcase the challenges and triumphs she faced during a pivotal period in her life.

This development follows comments from the show’s creator, Heidi Thomas, who has suggested that the main series may take a hiatus eventually, paving the way for a fresh spin-off that could inject new energy into the franchise.

According to a source who spoke to The Sun, Trixie stands out as an ideal candidate for such a spin-off.

Her character is known for being one of the more adventurous and spirited individuals at Nonnatus House, which implies that her backstory could be rich with compelling experiences and emotional depth.

This week, Heidi told Radio Times that although they might take a break from making the show, she couldn’t see the CTM universe ending entirely.

She said: “Those of us who are most invested in the show – cast and producers alike, who have been there since the beginning – it is our lives.

“I don’t believe Call The Midwife will ever end. But I do think we might take a break at some point.”

She continued: “I’m not able to talk about things. We have a rolling, ongoing conversation at this point every year: Is there an endpoint? What are we working towards?

“Increasingly, we do see opportunities to expand our storytelling world. So if we do take a break, it will be to look at other aspects of Call The Midwife.”
