Beloved BBC gameshow host dies aged 78 as family pay heartbreaking tribute

Henry Kelly, who presenter beloved shows such as Going for Gold and Game for a Laugh, has died at the age of 78, his family confirmed.

The family revealed that he “died peacefully” on Tuesday (February 25) “after a period of ill health”. The statement read: “Henry will be sorely missed by his friends and family, inclyding his partner Karolyn Shindler, their son Alexander, Henry’s daughter Siobhan and her mother Marjorie.”

After graduating from University College Dublin with a degree in English in 1968, he became a journalist after landing a job at The Irish Times.

He was soon promoted to the post of its Belfast-based Northern Editor back in 1970, a post which he proudly helf for five years. Four years later, Kelly made a complete career change at the age of 34.

The broadcaster left the newspaper and joined the in 1976, working for Radio 4’s The World Tonight. But in 1980, the TV star decided to leave behind a career in journalim and chose to pursue another acreer in television at the age of 34.

He soon made it big when he started his career presenting in light entertainment shows, fronting the likes of Game for a Laugh, lunchtime quix show Going For Gold, breakfast show TV-AM and the first iteration of Good Morning Britain.

Kelly later became one of the launch presenters of Classic FM and also hosted shows on speech station LBC and Radio London. He tied the knot to fellow journalist Karolyn and settled down in a house in North London. The star is survived by his two adult children.

After the tragic news hit the headlines, fans flooded to X – formerly known as Twitter to share their fond memories and pass on their condolences to his loved ones online.

One user penned: “Ah RIP Henry Kelly [prayer emoji]. Loved Going For Gold [gold medal emoji] on the whenever I wanted a sick day from school. Prime lunch time TV viewing.”
