Heritage sites across the UK are opening their doors for free, or a reduced ticket cost, in March as the National Lottery Open Week returns.

From Saturday, March 15, to Sunday, March 23, venues that receive lottery funding will participate in National Lottery Open Week to thank those who have purchased tickets.

Through selling tickets, the National Lottery raise £30 million per week towards good causes, including charities and the running of heritage sites through organisations such as the National Trust, English Heritage, and Historic Royal Palaces.

During this week, visitors can delve into the past at historic houses, castles, and museums, embrace nature in numerous wildlife hotspots, or enjoy a culture fix by visiting nearby art galleries and theatres.

All you need to do is purchase a lottery ticket and bring it along with you to the venue – one ticket is needed per adult, while under-18s can accompany them for free.

National Trust sites up and down the country are opening their doors during National Lottery Open Day, with visitors (who have purchased a lottery ticket) able to visit places such as Giant’s Causeway in County Antrim, Lincolnshire’s Tattershall Castle, and Devon’s Buckland Abbey for free.

Members of the National Trust can also bring along a friend for free, with no second lottery ticket needed.

Visitors are recommended to check the National Trust website before travelling to their chosen destination, as not everywhere can participate in this scheme, and some sites only do so on certain days.

Similarly, English Heritage is also offering free entry to a number of its locations, although only on 22 and 23 March. On some days during the week, they are also giving exclusive, behind-the-scenes tours at selected sites.

Historic Royal Palaces are giving lottery ticket holders 50% off tickets to the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, Kensington Palace, and Hillsborough Castle and Gardens. Again, check before travelling as some sites are only included on certain days.

Other places opening their doors for free or discounted entry include The Eden Project, the Charles Dickens Museum, the World Rugby Museum, and Painshill Park.
