Uber users travelling abroad should brace themselves for significant changes, as the tech giant is set to roll out important updates this Thursday (February 27). For UK users travelling internationally – particularly in Canada, the US or countries that adopt the euro – the app will now default to British pounds as the primary currency for transactions, adding a new 1.5% conversion fee to each trip.

However, tech-savvy travellers can dodge this extra charge by tweaking their in-app settings. By going to “account”, followed by “wallet”, and scrolling to “preferred currency”, users can select “no preferred currency” and confirm their choice.

For those looking to save every penny, MoneySavingExpert.com suggests keeping an eye on your inbox for Uber’s explanatory email, which is expected to contain a link directly to the app’s currency preference page. Remember, your card provider determines the fees you’ll incur for overseas usage: while most levy charges from 2% to 3%, certain credit cards offer foreign usage without any extra costs.

MoneySavingExpert recommends the Chase Mastercard Debit Card as an ideal travel companion. With its near-perfect Mastercard exchange rates, no fees on spending or withdrawals, and an attractive 1% cashback on numerous purchases up to £15 per month, it’s an excellent way to mitigate travel expenses.

Nonetheless, if using a travel credit card, ensure the balance is cleared monthly to bypass interest charges. Meanwhile, Uber asserts that this update is meant to simplify cost comprehension for travellers, reports .

The firm has made it clear on their website that pricing will be displayed in the local currency of the user’s location. However, they caution that “Prices will be shown in the currency of the region you’re in. You may be charged variable conversion fees with an exchange rate set by your payment method provider, and foreign transaction fees may apply. Check your credit card or payment method terms for more information.

Uber also highlighted a key point regarding currency preferences: “By default, Uber may assign your home currency as your preferred currency. The currency may be assigned to users gradually over a period of time but you can make changes to your currency preferences at any time in your Wallet within the Uber app. Your currency change will be reflected starting the next eligible trip.”
