Former youth sensation Federico Macheda has offered his services as attack continues to misfire. The 33-year striker is known for one of the most memorable debut goals in United’s history against in April 2009.
called on Macheda with the hosts trailing 2-1 at Old Trafford before equalised, setting up a dramatic finale.
In the third minute of injury time, the Italian starlet turned his man and curled in the winning goal, made all the more memorable by Martin Tyler’s commentary for Sky Sports.
Fast forward 16 years and United have little hope of such a spark.
The Red Devils have scored just 30 goals in 26 Premier League games throughout a torrid season that has left them slumped in 15th.
Amorim’s only forwards – , Joshua Zirkzee and Alejandro Garnacho – have nine league strikes between them this term.
The trio have plundered a measly total of two goals in their combined 54 previous games in all competitions. It’s a dismal state of affairs.
So much so that Macheda, who is enjoying his twilight years at Greek club Asteras Tripolis, his 12th since his iconic United bow, believes he could offer Amorim a fresh option.
Asked whether he could make the desired impact up front, the 33-year-old told : “Now? At 33? I think I could play there. Yes. Do better? I don’t know.

“I must say it’s not easy to play for now, but I think I could still play there.
“Personally, I like Zirkzee and Hojlund. The club is under pressure. The situation is not easy for any striker, even if you put Lewandowski in the team.
“But as a player, I can see myself playing there at the moment. A couple of games if needs me!
“I know the Premier League level. It’s very difficult but I could play there. Why not?”
Macheda also backed Amorim to turn United’s fortunes around within a few years if he gets his recruitment at Old Trafford right.
The Italy Under-21 international wants more leaders in the ilk of , Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez to join the ranks.
He added: “I believe yes he can. Amorim has a special connection. He’s one coach who can get to fight for everything.
“I like Amorim even if you don’t see the results. Maybe sometimes they play bad football. It’s difficult because for a club to be successful, you need great players.
“United doesn’t have the team to win the Premier League at the moment. They have good players, but if you put any coach in, it wouldn’t change a lot.”
