John Challis’s wife Carol shared a touching memory of the star on X giving fans an insight into his final days. The beloved actor, who played the iconic car dealer Boycie in sitcom died in Spetember 2021 after a battle with .
Carol posted an image of the star looking out over a beach below. “Only one month before he died.I think he knew he hadn’t got long because he wanted to go ‘down to the sea for one last time,’” she wrote.
When a fan asked in the comments how she was Carol admitted she was missing her husband. “Bit of a rough week, last week. Feeling better now. Just missing John a lot lately, especially on trips out to the seaside,” she confessed.
She gave further insight into their life when a fan commented: “Huge hugs Carol, thank you for sharing your joys and your loss. I think it brings us closer to the man you cherished and the man who loved his acting career. He’ll always be Boyce to a lot of people but is there one thing that makes you think of John and makes you smile? X.”
“John loved Here I Go Again by @davidcoverdale and Whitesnake. It was our road trip anthem and he was never happier than singing along to it at the top of his voice.The memory of that make me smile,” she shared.

Another wrote: “So sad Carol – missing our partner so much is the price we pay for being in love…xx.”
“Hope you are ok Carol. I always believe someone knows when they are about to die…as a nurse I’ve seen it many times, and personally too. My dad died last June and the journey of grief is a weird one. Take care Carol xx,” someone else chimed in.
“I met him and he was the complete definition of a gentleman – absolutely wonderful person and I really felt his loss when he died – thank you to John Challis for all the great memories and thanks to you Carol for making him happy!” another shared.
Meanwhile another offered: “Carol. I never met John but like many I appreciated his on my screen growing up. I’ve followed you for quite a while and it’s clear from your memories and posts he was so very loved and was a genuine soul. Sending you best wishes.”

John starred in the iconic British comedy from 1981 until 2003, alongside Sir David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst. He also reprised the character in spin off show The Green Green Grass from 2005 to 2009.
He died “peacefully in his sleep” aged 79 on September 19, 2021. A statement from his family released at the time said: “It is with heavy hearts that we bring you such sad news.
“Our dear friend and yours, John Challis, has died peacefully in his sleep, after a long battle with cancer.
“He will always be loved for being ‘Boycie’ and leaves a great legacy of work that will continue to bring pleasure and smiles for many years to come.
