Pilots on a flight were forced to make the plane climb suddenly to avoid a jet crossing the runway.

The Southwest Airlines plane attempted to land at Chicago’s Midway Airport at about 8.50am CST today, but airport webcam video shared on X, formerly Twitter, shows the pilots had to abruptly pull up its nose after spotting the second plane on the runway.

The second plane, described as a business jet, entered the runway without authorisation, AP reports.

Southwest Flight 2504 which was enroute to Midway Airport from Omaha, safely landed “after the crew reported a precautionary go-around to avoid a simple conflict with another aircraft that entered the runway,” an airline spokesperson said in an email.

Audio recording between the crew and the tower was caught, including the ground tower employee breaking off mid-message to the plane.

The pilot then said “Southwest 2504 going around” and followed directions to climb back to 3,000 feet.

The FAA have released a statement and said that is is investigating the incident.
