and royal absence has highlighted a flaw, claims legendary broadcaster Sir Trevor McDonald.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down as senior royals in 2020 and embarked on a new life in Montecito, California.
Five years after Meghan and Harry left the UK columnist Sir Trevor, 85, lamented the loss to the .
He claimed their absence is more noticeable as the royals have faced mounting health challenges, with and recently undergoing cancer treatment.
It comes as the king opted for a more slimmed-down British royal family to focus more on the monarch’s role as head of state and reduce the number of people living off public funds.

“To my mind, it’s a great shame is no longer part of the working monarchy,” Sir Trevor wrote.
“And not only because his presence would give them strength in numbers; the past year has exposed just how ‘slimmed down’ the monarchy has become, with both the King and the Princess of Wales taking time out for cancer treatment.”
The former ITV newsreader commented: “Having met [Harry] three or four times over the years, I found him unfailingly friendly, honest and genuine. I was struck by the similarity to his mother, the late Princess Diana.’
He also claimed that Meghan “never stood a chance – she is a foreigner: an American, a divorcee, a former actress – and black.”

Sir Trevor added: “Meghan could have brought a new dimension to the monarchy… She was never given a chance to prove herself.”
The veteran broadcaster’s comments come as King Charles undergoes cancer treatment and after the Princess of Wales announced she is in remission.
