Lawyers for Luigi Mangione, the 23-year-old accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, say that their client has been receiving photos from supporters.
They also want to let those supporters know that those photos are being screened by law enforcement officials, according to the FAQ page on his legal defense website.
The page notes that while Mangione is allowed to receive photos via Shutterfly and FreePrints, the photos will be screened before being given to him ― a process that could take a while “due to the volume of photos” he’s apparently being sent.
“Luigi appreciates the photos that are sent and kindly asks that people send no more than five photos at a time,” the FAQ reads. “Please note that every photo that is received is screened and reviewed by law enforcement.”
The website also asks Mangione supporters to “temporarily refrain” from sending books.
People magazine said the note regarding the photos on the FAQ comes after more than 100 supporters ― mostly young women ― showed up at his court appearance last Friday at a courthouse in lower Manhattan.
Some even applauded the appearance of his lawyer, Karen Agnifilo, before security officers silenced them.
Mangione is facing 11 counts, including murder as an act of terrorism, in connection with Thompson’s slaying Dec. 4.
After a five-day search, he was arrested Dec. 9 in a Pennsylvania McDonald’s, authorities say, carrying a gun matching the one used to kill Thompson, as well as fake IDs and a notebook expressing hostility toward the health insurance industry and its wealthy executives.
He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Despite the seriousness of the crimes he’s been charged with, Mangione has attracted a wide amount of support from people, including many who feel victimized by the health care industry.
About 19,000 people have donated over $600,000 to his legal defense fund.
