Liverpool star who demanded to leave club admits he ‘dreams’ of returning to Arne Slot

Sepp van den Berg has revealed that he ‘dreams’ of returning to . The Dutchman joined Brentford in the summer after growing frustrated over a lack of opportunities at Anfield.

Van den Berg asked to leave before replaced last summer. Had he remained at the club, the 23-year-old would have been on the verge of winning his first Premier League title.

After loan spells with Preston, Schalke and Mainz, the defender decided that a permanent departure from was the best step for his career. However, Van den Berg has not ruled out a return in the future.

“I had a few conversations with Slot. But before the preparation started, I already indicated to the club that I wanted to leave and play minutes,” he told .

“I would be lying if I said that I did not dream of returning to one day. That is still on my mind. But for now, it was better for my career to take a different path and play a lot.

“I am doing that now and that allows me to develop as well as possible. After the preparation, indicated that I had done so well that they wanted me to stay. But I did not really see that myself. It was all my choice – I am happy that I now play in the Premier League every week.”

have suffered a couple of defensive injuries this season. Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez, and Conor Bradley have missed parts of the campaign with fitness problems.

Van den Berg might have had game time at centre-back or right-back had he remained on Merseyside. He has admitted that he has considered how much he might have played at had he stayed – but feels happier now that he is a Premier League regular at Brentford.

“I would be lying if I said that I didn’t look at that myself,” Van den Berg continued.

“That’s football, you don’t know. I did well in the preparation, and I could really see myself playing for the club, but not with the credit that I now have at Brentford. I am now a starter who always plays as long as he is fit.

“At I would have been more of a player who had to fill in gaps. I would rather be that starter. And who knows, if I do well here for two or three years, I will return to and be a starter there too.”
