A rival bakery chain has been popping up across England as its fan base is growing.

The 87-year-old bakery Coughlans has launched multiple stores since gaining traction over the past few years, spreading 31 stores out across London, Surrey, Kent and East Sussex.

Last year, Coughlans secured a huge investment from TV presenter Romesh Ranganathan, who purchased a stake in the business. The cash injection and media coverage from Mr Ranganathan could mean the Greggs rival is the next big bakery chain.

Converted Greggs fans have expressed their love for Coughlans on social media, as one person claims it is “10x better”.

“Don’t know who needs to hear this but Coughlans Bakery is 10x better than Greggs,” they posted on X.

Another keen pastry lover wrote: “Finally had a Coughlans bakery sausage roll and they are definitely better than Greggs.” A third user replied to this saying: “Totally agree! They’re delicious.”

Despite Coughlans doubling its size of production space in just a few years, the bakery is not yet running 24-hour shifts, unlike its rival. Going from 19 to 31 stores in just four years, the bakery is looking at franchising further as the TV presenter seeks to elevate the brand.

Greggs previously launched its famous vegan sausage roll in 2019, a product which Coughlans launched at the same time. Soon after both businesses were back competing when they introduced vegan steak bakes.

Bakery lovers took matters into their own hands to decide which one is the best, with a journalist from MyLDN taste testing the two.

Writing about Greggs, they said: “It wasn’t chunky like a steak bake should be. I would call it more of a mince pasty. I’m glad I tried it. I’m also glad I didn’t queue for hours to wait for one,” and rated it a 3 out of 5.

However, when trying Coughlans vegan bake, they said: “It tasted, smelled and felt like I was eating real chunky beef when I bit into it. The seitan steak was chubby and juicy, the hot gravy rich and silky and the mushrooms were a fantastic extra,” rating it the superior 4 out of 5.
