Call the Midwife boss addresses show ‘break’ as she discusses future of BBC series

Fans of Call the Midwife could be in for a shock as discussions about the show’s future on the are underway.

Set in Poplar, the beloved series is contemplating a temporary departure from our screens, allowing the creative team space to brainstorm prospective plotlines and contemplate the shows finale, programme creator Heidi Thomas has disclosed.

After captivating audiences for 13 years, there’s speculation that the cherished series might make way for a new spin-off during its potential break, while decisions regarding its ultimate future are made, says Heidi.

With ‘s top-rated medical drama possibly hitting the pause button, fans are bound to be truly surprised at this revelation. Heidi said in a interview: “I don’t believe Call the Midwife will ever end. But I do think we might take a break at some point.”

Although current backstage happenings are in process, she did note the typical annual strategising was occurring, as producers deliberate over an approaching conclusion, reports .

She elaborated: “There is a sort of a rolling, ongoing conversation that we always have at this point every year, which is: is there an end point?”

Heidi further remarked: “Increasingly, we do see opportunities to expand our storytelling world. So if we do take a break, it will be with a view to looking at other aspects of Call the Midwife.”

In a surprising turn of events, Megan Cusack is also set to exit the beloved Sunday midwife drama series. The actress, famed for her portrayal of Nancy Corrigan, has decided to spread her wings in pursuit of new opportunities.

Discussing her decision to leave, Megan expressed: “Sometimes, you’ve got to step out of your comfort zone to grow. I’ve learnt so much, but I’m at the start of my career and I need to take a leap of faith.”

She also remarked: “It’s bittersweet, really.”

Call the Midwife currently airs on Sunday’s on One from 8pm.
