There’s a new trend on TikTok that’s proving humor can come from unexpected — and sometimes dark — places.
As of recent, people are participating in the “you’re so funny” trend on the social media platform. It involves users sharing videos of themselves doing nonchalant activities, like sipping a drink, sitting down or smiling at their phones. They write “you’re so funny” over the video, then proceed to name a traumatic childhood event.
In many of these videos, the song “She Looks So Perfect” by 5 Seconds of Summer plays in the background.
It’s unclear whether the intent of these videos is to prove that humor can rise in spite of dark circumstances, or if negative situations can result in developing a funny personality. Regardless, the “you’re so funny” trend seemingly links people together through shared childhood trauma.
In one video, the user wrote, “‘You’re so funny’ Thanks, my parents would forget I was at practice and leave me at the pool with no way to call them.”
Another shared a video, penning, “‘You’re so funny’ thanks! I’ve felt left out my entire life!”
Others detailed negative relationships they’ve had that made them who they are today.
“‘You’re so funny’ Thanks, guys in middle school asked me out as a joke or a dare,” one person shared.
Many “you’re so funny” videos on TikTok have resulted in followers chiming in, sharing that they too overcame a childhood trauma.
After one user shared a “you’re so funny” video that involved being “obsessed with someone” who they couldn’t “have for four years straight,” others chimed in about how relatable it was.
“7 years 😃😭,” a fellow TikToker commented.
“10 years 🥰😭,” another wrote.
“Crying in 13 years 😀,” a third added.
Another TikToker posted a video with: “You’re so funny’ Thanks I’ve literally blacked out most of my childhood memories.”
“I don’t remember ANYTHING,” a TikToker said in response.
