But there is much more to Maryport than just its cheap house prices. The town was originally home to Alauna, a Roman fort built to protect the coastline near Hadrian’s Wall. 

Remains of the Roman presence can still be seen at the Senhouse Roman Museum, which houses one of the largest collections of Roman artefacts in Britain. 

Over the centuries, Maryport became a big shipping and coal mining hub, with its shipyards producing over 280 vessels. 

It was also the birthplace of Thomas Henry Ismay, the founder of the White Star Line, which famously built the Titanic.

In recent years, Maryport has seen investment in regeneration, with a yacht marina and improvements to the town’s waterfront.

The promenade now offers breathtaking views over the Irish Sea, and coastal walks allow locals and visitors to take in the scenery and the town’s famous golden sunsets.

Unlike more expensive seaside locations, Maryport remains affordable for first-time buyers, retirees, and investors. 

For comparison, the average house price in Brighton is more than £400,000, while in Cornwall, properties in hotspots like St Ives can exceed £500,000.

What’s more, Maryport has a strong sense of community and a lively cultural scene. 

The town hosts the Maryport Blues Festival, which has attracted acts such as Jools Holland, Van Morrison, and Chuck Berry. 

It also holds the Taste of the Sea Festival, where visitors can try local Cumbrian specialities like Rum Butter and Kendal Mint Cake.

For those who enjoy sports and outdoor activities, Maryport Golf Club has an 18-hole course with stunning views, while the nearby coastline is perfect for walking and cycling.
